How to Write the Perfect PR Pitch in 5 Easy Steps

The media can make or break your career.

If you want to leave a legacy, you’ve got to start by getting your story in front of the right people. The right kind of publicity can skyrocket you to success. But get on the media’s bad side and it will quickly become an uphill battle. Fortunately, you don’t have to leave it up to fate. Your story is just that—YOURS—so you want to be the one to tell it. Take control of your story (and your destiny) by shining a strategic spotlight on what makes you unique and irreplaceable, and watch your thought leadership take flight.

How do you do it? It all begins with the infamous pitch.

Luckily for you, our Communications Manager and resident PR Queen, Pooja Shah has 5 quick tips to help you craft the perfect pitch:

Find the right journalist

Often overlooked, this step is ultimately as important as the pitch itself. You are selling to a person, not a robot. So take some time to get to know them. Read up on their past work and determine their style. You want to make sure your story sounds like something they’d actually dive into. Otherwise, you risk wasting both of your time.

Define your narrative

It’s your story. So own it. Be proud of it. This is not the time to be modest. Tout your accomplishments and flaunt where you’ve gone the extra mile. Consider what it is about your authentic story that is eye-catching and click-worthy so that you can position it in a way that’s bound to drive traffic. You want to make the media believe in you enough to get you in front of their audience.

Delete half your pitch

It’s critical to be concise. Editors’ inboxes are flooded with hundreds of pitches every day. If you get straight to the point, you’ll instantly get their attention—and respect.

Be original

Editors can smell a copy/paste job a mile away. If you commit this fatal faux paux, your pitch is guaranteed to end up in the trash. If you expect them to take the time to read your story, take the time to curate it. All it takes is 15 minutes to create attractive and cohesive fonts, images, and a personalized intro to pique their interest.

If you can’t even spell the editors’ names correctly, how can you expect them to shine their precious spotlight on you? Sloppy work can seriously damage your brand reputation. Before you hit send, read your pitch over three times. Then, get three friends to read it over another three times. You can never be too careful!

Follow these five steps and you’ll have a beautifully curated pitch that the media will find irresistable. Be proud of it! This is just the beginning of your legacy.
